The cost and environmental benefits of burning a biomass fuel

It is not just the spiralling cost of gas and oil that makes wood a highly desirable and cheaper alternative. In addition to being a sustainable fuel source, burning a biomass fuel like wood does not pollute the air as much as fossil fuels and it does not produce pollutants like sulphur that can cause acid rain. It does release carbon dioxide, but this offset by the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide captured by the tree it came from through photosynthesis, that’s why it is a Carbon Neutral fuel.

If wood is burnt cleanly then smoke, which contains some pollutants and particulate matter is reduced. ESSE’s unique, patent pending Afterburn2™ system virtually eliminates smoke and produces an exceptionally clean burn.

So when you cook on a Woodfired ESSE you are making a valuable contribution to the future health of our planet. It is also worth pointing out that the wood ash is an excellent plant fertiliser and can be put to good use in your garden or vegetable patch.

Cheaper domestic hot water and central heating

It makes sense to extend those carbon neutral, environmental and cost benefits to the provision of domestic hot water and also to powering your central heating system. Which is why the Woodfired ESSE is available in three models. The WF for cooking only, the WFD which also provides domestic hot water and the WF23 which, in addition to both of the above incorporates a boiler that will power a central heating system requiring up to 23000btu/h.

A removable baffle means the boiler can be de-powered for summer use. For larger dwellings we recommend integrating our 700 woodstove with integral boiler. This will provide a combined output of 50000 btu/h and offers a more flexible means of powering a larger system. It is a cheap way to heat too. In addition to the relatively low cost of wood as a fuel, all Woodfired central heating & domestic hot water models are subject to only 5% VAT as part of a government initiative to encourage carbon neutral heating products.

Fuel consumption, maintaining 190°C in top oven and optimum boiler output
MODEL lbs/hr
WF - Cooking only 1.9
WFD - Cooking & domestic hot water 2.8
WF23 - Cooking, hot water & central heating (25000btu/h) 6.5

Note: Fuel consumption figures are based on continuous, overnight burning using properly seasoned wood. The top oven being kept at baking/roasting temperature and boiler models producing optimum output throughout the day. For practical daily use these figures could be reduced by approximately one third.
